Srinagar, February 11 (PTI): In a bid to prevent fraud and misuse of mobile SIM cards, police have launched a SIM card verification drive across several districts of Kashmir, officials confirmed on Tuesday.

"In a proactive effort to curb the rising instances of fraud and unauthorized use of mobile SIMs, police have initiated a comprehensive verification drive in multiple districts of Kashmir," officials stated.

The drive aims to ensure strict compliance with established procedures for issuing SIM cards and prevent their potential misuse in cyber frauds and unlawful activities.

As part of this initiative, police officers are visiting SIM card vendors in their respective areas to verify their documentation processes and subscriber details.

Anantnag, Budgam, and Pulwama are among the districts where the drive is currently underway, with plans to extend it to other parts of the Kashmir Valley in the coming days.

> "This initiative is part of a broader security strategy to prevent the misuse of SIM cards in criminal, anti-national, and unlawful activities. With the rise in cyber frauds and growing security concerns, this verification drive will authenticate subscriber identities and ensure that vendors follow the strict guidelines set by the Department of Telecommunications," an official explained.

The verification process focuses on ensuring that only genuine individuals receive SIM cards and that vendors adhere to all mandatory documentation requirements before issuing new connections.

Police officials emphasized that the drive is also aimed at curbing the growing misuse of SIM cards in various fraudulent schemes, including online scams, financial frauds, and unauthorized communications.

> "By conducting random checks and enforcing compliance, the police aim to deter fraudulent practices and enhance the overall security framework within the region," officials added.

The move follows recent jail raids, during which authorities recovered multiple SIM cards from inmates in prisons across Jammu and Kashmir. This raised concerns about illegally obtained SIM cards being used for unauthorized communication and unlawful activities.

Authorities believe that strengthening the verification process at the point of SIM issuance will help prevent unauthorized mobile usage in sensitive areas and combat digital fraud more effectively.

The police have urged SIM vendors and telecom operators to fully cooperate with the ongoing verification drive. Meanwhile, the authorities have assured the public that legitimate mobile users will not face any disruptions during the process.
